Laura Crow (Costume Designer)

Laura Crow is an internationally known designer whose costumes have been seen in over 300 productions as far away as Japan and Yugoslavia as well as in England, Europe, and the US. Her work is best known to New Yorkers through her poetic realism designs for Lanford Wilson’s productions on Broadway and while resident designer for Circle Rep for 13 years. Her many awards include the Drama Desk, Obie, Villager, Maharam, and American Theatre Wing Awards (Broadway and off-Broadway), the Drama-Logue, and BackStage West Garland Awards (Los Angeles), Joseph Jefferson Nominations and Awards (Chicago), four ZONI Awards (Phoenix), and the Bay Area Critics Award (San Francisco). She has been selected four times to be among those representing American Theatre Design at the Prague Quadrennial and is one of two American designer representatives to The International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects, and Technicians (OISTAT) Scenography Commission, where she is currently the chair of the costume working group. Laura is a Professor of costume history and director of design at the University of Connecticut, yet actively designs for professional theatre, most recently Terrence McNally’s play Dedication, or The Stuff of Dreams, starring Nathan Lane and Marian Seldes in NYC, and the NY premier of Lanford Wilson’s Book of Days, directed by Marshall W. Mason at the Signature Theatre. Laura is proud to have been a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar in the Philippines in 2002, studying multiculturalism in festival costumes. More recently, she has continued her research into festival costume by organizing an International Symposium on Carnival Design for OISTAT in Santiago de Cuba, July 2004; Women in Theatre Design, Toronto, March 2005; Costume and Fashion: Where We Meet, Antwerp, March 2006; Costume, Dance and the New LED Lights, Tel Aviv, July 2006; An International Parade of Birds, Prague, June 2007; and Costume and Historical Research; Is It Relevant? coming up in Copenhagen and Stockholm, June 2008.
